I Endure

Bring the waves –
sorrow, despair, anger, hate.
They may rise above me,
fall down and swamp me –
but when the waves break and subside,
like a rock… I endure.

Bring the fire –
passion and zeal
enflame me and I glow,
becoming hot to the touch –
but when the last ember is cold,
like a rock… I endure.

Bring the rain –
silvery tears of joy
wash away the detritus
and I glisten again-
and when the rain has passed,
like a rock… I endure.

Bring the winds –
winds of time, winds of change
may buffet me endlessly
and flatten all around me –
but when the wind dies,
like a rock… I endure.

Bring them all –
these mighty forces.
Though they smooth and shape me,
it only serves to spread my substance to the world;
My core remains inviolate.
Like a rock… I endure.
